What Squarespace Really Costs

Hidden Costs
What the invoice doesn't show
The Basic plan charges a 2% transaction fee on physical products and a 7% fee on digital products — on top of payment processor fees. Selling a $50 course costs you $3.50 to Squarespace plus ~$1.75 in processing. Nearly 10% per sale.
The Advanced plan price nearly doubled in the 2025 restructure: from $52/mo to $99/mo (90% increase). Plus went from $28/mo to $39/mo (+39%). Legacy plan holders were not grandfathered indefinitely.
Basic plan blocks custom CSS/JavaScript injection, premium integrations (Mailchimp, Zapier, OpenTable), Google Workspace email, and limits contributors to 2. Core ($23/mo) is the true entry point for any real business use.
Add-ons stack fast: domain renewal ($20-70/yr after Year 1), professional email ($7-22/user/mo after Year 1), Email Campaigns ($8-118/mo separate subscription), Acuity Scheduling (separate pricing). A fully loaded Advanced plan approaches $3,000/year.
What the data says
2025 Price Restructure Impact
A small ecommerce business on the old Commerce Advanced plan paying $624/year was forced to migrate to the new Advanced plan at $1,188/year — an additional $564/year with no new features. At that price point, Shopify Basic ($29/mo = $348/year) with its full ecommerce stack becomes significantly cheaper.

Competitive Context
Why the landscape is shifting
Squarespace's pricing is designed as an upgrade funnel, not a service tier. The 7% digital products fee and 2% physical goods fee on Basic aren't cost recovery — they're margin pressure to force you onto plans that cost 2-6x more, making the '$16/month' headline a loss leader for what most businesses actually pay.
AI generates complete sites from prompts in under 60 seconds. AI Blog Generator, Image Generator, and SEO Assistant included. From $2.99/mo on long-term plans.
AI-powered design and page generation. Free tier includes 1,000 pages and 10 CMS collections with full AI access. Pro at $30/mo comparable to Squarespace Core but with more design freedom.

How we calculate TCO
Total Cost of Ownership includes subscription fees, labor (valued at $50/hr based on BLS ECEC data), and estimated error costs. Error cost is inherently speculative and can be set to $0 for a conservative estimate. All defaults are sourced from published benchmarks and adjustable in our methodology.
